We drive 4.5 hours from Whanganui to Matamata, with a stop at Lake Taupō. We first drive past hilly landscapes to Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro and then on to Lake Taupō. After three hours, we reach Taupō and have a steak for refreshment before tackling the rest of the route. In Matamata we have a small room with Sheryl and Greg with a wonderful view and only 5 minutes away from the Hobbiton film set.
