We really saw a lot of accommodation, many were great, all were clean and ALL had something nice. We drove a lot of kilometres and the roads were in very good condition. The roads to the places of interest were also well maintained.

The landscape is incredibly beautiful, varied and vast. From rolling floodplains to forests that are used for forestry, kilometres of vineyards, kiwi plantations, mandarin trees, huge fern trees, breathtaking limestone cliffs, bubbling hot geysers, bubbling mud fields, waterfalls in ALL shapes and sizes, majestic volcanoes, imposing steep cliffs, beaches as far as the eye can see and beyond, botanical gardens and war memorials even in the smallest village. In the fields there are whole walls of trees to break the wind, sheep, cattle, red deer and the occasional horse can be seen everywhere on our journeys through New Zealand. We were also able to catch a glimpse of Maori culture.

The whole island is always green, even when it was fresh, windy and wet in late autumn.

You have to experience the sounds (fjords), they are indeed indescribably unique. 

Die Unwetter im Februar 2023 haben in der Gegend von Napier Dörfer, Felder, Strassen, Eisenbahnschienen und ganze Hügel weggeschwemmt  Traktoren, Autos und Dächer wurden irgendwo weiter unten wieder entdeckt in den skurrilsten Anordnungen in der Landschaft  

We got to see jumping dusky dolphins, huge sperm whales, super cute sea lions, birds in all their splendour in the wild. Even kiwis in the breeding centres. 

In culinary terms, we didn't find any New Zealand specialities apart from pies, fish and chips, oysters, lobster and burgers. But Asian cuisine is represented in all varieties and is really delicious. Charly introduced us to the finer points of good cuisine in Auckland on the food tour, absolutely recommendable. The coffee, wine and beer culture is great and fun. Many independent breweries offer tours of their production halls and always have tasty snacks and freshly tapped beer, cider or ginger beer on offer.

You quickly get used to driving on the left-hand side of the road, and eventually you get into the car on the right-hand side too. You can buy everything in the supermarkets, including Lindt chocolate, alcohol is available in the liquor shop and you can even get good bread in a bakery from time to time. It's easy to travel, the people are very nice, happy to help and are always up for a chat. The warm encounter with Kathy and Ian in Christchurch will remain in our hearts. 

All the bookings worked, there wasn't a single nasty surprise, and everything else is very relaxed and works perfectly. You eventually get to grips with the New Zealand dialect. After all, a „biid“ (pronounced) is a bed and there are so many idioms that you have to understand first.

We had a great time in New Zealand, with one laughing and one crying eye, we fly back to the warmth of Fiji.

Es hat die ganze Nacht heftig gewittert und bevor wir uns auf den Weg nach Haast machen, fahren wir ins Tal hinein. Wie schon so oft haben wir Glück und können zum Aussichtspunkt hochlaufen und sehen nun auch den Franz Josef Gletscher.

Fox Glacier

Weiter geht die Fahrt auf dem HW6 und in Fox Glacier hat es etwas ausserhalb einen schönen Aussichtspunkt, mit Sicht in das Tal mit dem Fox Gletscher.

Haast

Ist sehr übersichtlich, einige Häuser und Motels, wir waren nur eine Nacht da und haben uns noch die kilometerlange Jackson Bay angeschaut.

Von Haast nach Wãnaka

Auf dem Weg haben wir die beiden Wasserfälle und Tunder Creek Falls Fantails Falls noch angeschaut, es hat aber noch unzählige andere auf der Strecke. Der Pass selber ist mit 562m nicht sehr hoch, es geht lange dem Flussbett entlang und steigt dann kurz an.

The Neck

Ist eine Erhöhung zwischen dem Lake Wãnaka und dem Lake Hãwea und gibt einen Ausblick auf beide Seen. Kurz darauf treffen wir dann auch in Wãnaka ein.

Wãnaka

The motel room is newly renovated and has good heating. Everyone in Wanaka is waiting for the snow that should be coming now, but we're glad it's not yet. The tree in the lake is the attraction here with a large car park. At the Italian restaurant with German service we have pizza from the wood-fired oven.

Die Südinsel

Es war toll hier auf der Südinsel, wir haben viel gesehen: wunderbare Landschaften, Berge, Gletscher, die meterhohen Farnbäume, Seelöwen, Kiwi‘s, viele Wasserfälle, die Potwale, unsere Begegnung mit Kathy und Ian, Bergpapageiein, Reben soweit das Auge reicht, springende Dusky Delfine, Streetart, raue See mit Leuchttürmen, wunderbare historische Bauten, wie der Bahnhof von Dunedin, der südlichste Punkt von Neuseeland, viele Schafe und noch mehr Schafe, Austern, wunderschöne Buchten, die Sounds (wie Fjorde im Norden), ein altes Dampfschiff, ein Kinoabend und mehr Burger als wir eigentlich wollten. Jetzt freuen wir uns auf die Nordinsel. Wir fahren am Mittwoch zurück nach Queenstown und fliegen dann nach Auckland.

At the viewpoint to the Otira Viaduct, there are very cheeky Kea mountain parrots.

Nach der Passhöhe fahren wir noch etwas weiter zum Weimakariri River, die Aussicht auf die Berge, fast wie zu Hause.

Zurück in Artur‘s Pass Station geht es dem Fluss entlang oder bergauf, wir entscheiden uns zum Devils Punchbowl Wasserfall zu Laufen.

The village church has a view of a small waterfall, we continue to the riverbed of the Otira River.

The waterfall is quite high up, there are a few steps up to the viewing platform and, as always, the path is well maintained.

Markus hat so lange gejammert über seine kalten Hände, bis er auch so tolle Handschuhe von Sylvia gestrickt bekommen hat. Sie geben schön warm.

Es geht wieder zurück nach Greymouth.

We make our first stop at Maruia Falls, which looks a bit like the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen.

Weiter geht es auf kurvigen Strassen an die Westküste und da zu den Pancake Rock‘s und ja sie sehen auch ein wenig so aus wie geschichtete Pancake.

Greymouth ist sehr übersichtlich in der lokalen Brauerei gibt es gute Verpflegung. Unsere Unterkunft hat Meerblick und liegt ruhig etwas ausserhalb.
