Franz Josef Glacier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There was a violent thunderstorm all night, and before we set off for Haast, we drive down into the valley. As so often before, we\u2019re in luck and can walk up to the viewpoint, where we can now see the Franz Josef Glacier too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox Glacier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The journey continues along the HW6, and just outside Fox Glacier there is a lovely viewpoint offering views down into the valley with the Fox Glacier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s very uncluttered, with just a few houses and motels; we were only there for one night and took the time to have a look at Jackson Bay, which stretches for kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Haast to W\u00e3naka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the way, we stopped to look at the two waterfalls \u2013 Tunder Creek Falls and Fantails Falls \u2013 but there are countless others along the route. The pass itself, at 562 metres, isn\u2019t very high; the route follows the riverbed for a long way and then climbs briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Neck <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an incline between Lake W\u00e3naka and Lake H\u00e3wea, offering views of both lakes. Shortly afterwards, we arrive in W\u00e3naka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

W\u00e3naka<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The motel room is newly renovated and has good heating. Everyone in Wanaka is waiting for the snow that should be coming now, but we're glad it's not yet. The tree in the lake is the attraction here with a large car park. At the Italian restaurant with German service we have pizza from the wood-fired oven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The South Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was brilliant here on the South Island; we saw so much: wonderful landscapes, mountains, glaciers, the metre-tall fern trees, sea lions, kiwis, lots of waterfalls, the sperm whales, our meeting with Kathy and Ian, mountain parakeets, vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, leaping dusky dolphins, street art, rough seas with lighthouses, marvellous historic buildings such as Dunedin railway station, the southernmost point of New Zealand, lots of sheep and even more sheep, oysters, beautiful bays, the Sounds (like fjords in the north), an old steamship, a night at the cinema and more burgers than we actually wanted. Now we\u2019re looking forward to the North Island. We\u2019re heading back to Queenstown on Wednesday and then flying to Auckland.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
