Day 16: Wushan and the Scenic Gorges

Well rested, we go to breakfast shortly after 8 a.m ., because nothing happens until 11 a.m. Markus treats himself to a massage including foot care, you should see the back, bright red. But if it helps.

In the meantime we pass the Qutang Gorge by ship. It’s impressive how the rocks suddenly rise into the air. There is immediately a strong wind when passing through. Unfortunately it also rains a bit. But we have the good rain jackets.

After lunch we drive through the Wu Gorge. It measures 46 km. It is really raining here now. The rocks slowly emerge from the fog.

In the afternoon we can watch the Shennv Stream or Goddess Stream. For this we walk over a floating jetty to the pier where smaller boats are waiting for us to take us into the gorge. A local guide leads us super charmingly through this hour of the tour. She lives in the mountains here. She tells us that they also had to leave their old home in 2003 because the land was flooded during the construction of the dam. The Goddess River is now about 80 meters deep. And before the flooding only a few meters. There is no hospital up here, but Chinese medicine is growing all over the mountain. There is no means of transport in the mountains, except for your own legs. The children walk about 1 hour to the elementary school. It is a nice trip with very entertaining information. Even if the weather was not so great.

Tonight is captain’s dimner. We are greeted with a glass of sparkling wine, but not by the captain himself. Today you can have Austen in all varieties. Also pretty much everything in seafood. Uuuund jep, there was also sashimi. We have never had such a strong wasabi. At the sashimi station we queued twice. We treated ourselves to a glass of red wine, which was also quite ok. Just in time for dessert, the crew performed a happy dance. They were spread all over the restaurant. Then the young captain came and thanked the guests and wished us all the best. There was still a birthday to celebrate, oh no, there are two. Back in the room we pack our suitcases, because they are supposed to be at the reception by 11 pm. That’s stupid, but that’s just the way it is. Time is running out, tomorrow morning we are back on land and the shipping is already over. The somewhat quieter days have done us good.
