The connecting road from Christchurch to Greymouth leads over Arthur’s Pass. The TranzAlpine Train also passes through here. From Greymouth it is 100 km, at the beginning mainly along the Taramakau River. Towards the end it becomes a pass with a 17% gradient.
On the viewpoint to the Otira Viaduct, there are very cheeky Kea Mountain parrots.
After the top of the pass we drive a little further to the Weimakariri River, the view of the mountains, almost like at home.
View of Mt. Murchison 2408m, the riverbed is huge.
Back at Artur’s Pass Station we walk along the river or uphill, we decide to walk to the Devils Punchbowl waterfall.
The village church has a view of a small waterfall, we continue to the riverbed of the Otira River.
The waterfall is quite high up, it goes up a few stairs to the viewing platform, as always the path is well developed.
