From Whanganui to Matamata we drive 4.5 hours, with a stop at Lake Taupō. First we drive past hilly landscapes to Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro and then on to Lake Taupō. After three hours we reach Taupō, there is a steak for refreshment before we tackle the rest of the route. In Matamata we have a small room with Sheryl and Greg with a wonderful view and only 5 minutes from the Hobbiton film set.
