Penguin Parade

Tonight we have booked the Penguin Parade, the Ultimate Tour promises off the beaten track a tour with a ranger right on the beach.
We started at 17:00 and were warmly welcomed by Gary, our ranger. After a short introduction and indication of the technical aids (earphones with receiver for the commentary, binoculars and safety vest), we started. The waves on the beach were too high at high tide (we had that here before), so we were served the plan B. Probably the better option… We were allowed to look over the shoulder of the ranger boss in the control room. Then we had a separate area in the middle with the best view of the beach and last but not least, we were able to watch the penguins at eye level in the underground station. In many groups, almost 2000 penguins came back to the beach in their nests. The first group was huge, about 150 penguins at once came to the beach in a swell. We were able to experience everything up close. It’s a good thing that you can’t take pictures, it would disturb the animals too much.

The Little Penguins

Many thanks to Gary who explained everything to us very well, in between we were Dutch, but in the end he was able to do it. One penguin lady was very interested and waddled under our bench. You really can’t get any closer than that.
