When we arrived, we did some research on what to do. On this list was also the transfer of the driver’s license (driver’s license).
The project will start in mid-2024 after we have received our residence permit. If you are no longer resident in Switzerland, you have to apply for a driving licence from your country of residence. If you come back to Switzerland, it can be exchanged again without any problems.
So we went to Port Louis with the documents that are required on the homepage of the Trafic Branch. Once there, we were given a piece of paper with further required documents and sent back home.
Ok documents obtained and back again. The official checks and finds that the canton of Schwyz does not manage to print the whole number on the confirmation (because there is no expiration date on the ticket, it needs a confirmation that the ID card is valid): no leading zeros and even the last three digits (number of IDs you already had) are not printed. Three officials looked at it and all of them shook their heads. You have to know that the ones in Pfäffikon also copied our IDs on it with a stamp. It didn’t help either, the number was not the same. So during our stay in the 24/25 again to the road traffic office in Pfäffikon. Kindly they were able to “correct” something and gave it to us.
So then back to Port Louis, then the official determines everything is ok and takes the documents. In a week we are supposed to call if we can come back. With the passport photos and the fees. Clearly called. They said we would call back… after the third call without calling back we wrote an email… no answer.
Well, today we went again. After a long wait… sorry we can’t find the documents???? We’ll definitely call back, let’s stomp away again. Oha, the phone rings, we’re only 10 minutes away. Lo and behold, documents found???? they explained to us that they had called twice, well in the course of the call there was no call in absentia.
Luckily they found the documents again. Markus gave them the original of the confirmation. We would have had to do this again in Switzerland. Let’s go on. Now Sylvia has to pay 1500 mur after waiting about 20 minutes, about 15 minutes later Markus also ????, so again to the counter, there was a handwritten receipt.
Now all I have to do is fill out two forms (with the information that is already on the documents everywhere), sign it and then sign the blank paper from the driver’s license. It is bigger than our old blue one that we had in Switzerland.
In just three weeks we can now go pick up the ticket.
The old hands here told us, just continue driving with the CH card, that goes well until 75, then you will be wanted in Switzerland because you would have had to take the driving fitness test. Well, we’ll save ourselves that. By the way, here you have to go to the doctor from the age of 60.
Update 15.09.2025
We have now actually received the Mauritian driver’s license, but there was a short moment of shock. Markus’s new license was found immediately, Sylvia’s it took a while to find it. The IDs were not sorted from A to Z, well it was found after all.
